How to Actually Lower Your Electric Bill

Your heating and cooling system uses more electricity than everything else in your home combined — roughly half the bill. Here's what moves the needle, in order of impact.

1. Stop fighting your thermostat

Set it to 78°F in summer and 68°F in winter and leave it alone. Constant adjusting costs more than a steady setting, because the system works hardest during recovery. A programmable or smart thermostat that eases back while you sleep or work pays for itself fast.

2. Change the filter — this is the big one

A dirty filter chokes airflow, and low airflow means longer run times, higher bills, and frozen coils in summer. Check it every month. Replace every 1–3 months (monthly if you have pets). It's a cheap part that protects a system worth thousands.

3. Fix your ducts

Leaky ducts can waste 20–30% of the air your system produces — you're paying to heat and cool your crawl space. Signs: rooms that never get comfortable, ducts in unconditioned spaces, visible gaps or crushed runs. I can test and seal them; it's one of the highest-ROI fixes there is.

4. Keep the outdoor unit breathing

The condenser needs airflow. Clear leaves, grass clippings, and weeds — keep 2 feet clear on all sides and 5 feet above. Don't stack anything against it, and never cover a heat pump in winter (it needs year-round airflow).

5. Get the twice-a-year tune-up

I check refrigerant charge, clean coils, tighten electrical connections, and catch small problems before they become big bills. Skipping maintenance is the most expensive "saving" there is — neglected systems run noticeably less efficiently and die years early.

6. Know when the equipment is the problem

If your system is 10+ years old and your bills keep climbing despite everything above, the unit itself is the leak. Modern heat pumps — the right fit for East Tennessee's mild winters — use far less electricity than aging equipment. I'll give you an honest assessment, not a sales pitch. Call or text 865-712-0852.

The short version

Filter. Thermostat. Ducts. Tune-ups. Do those four and you've captured most of the savings available to you.
